female athletes Notice turbo start by Silke Gladisch-Moller in lane 5!
This is another of those freaky athletics records set in those years.
It was 1985, in Canberra for the 4th edition of IAAF World Cup, the GDR athletes set the world record for 4×100 metres with an extraterrestrial and still unbeaten 41.37, GDR improved it for the 9th consecutive time and frankly I doubt any relay could beat it.

Results:
1) GDR (Silke Gladisch-Möller, Sabine Rieger, Ingrid Auerswald, Marlies Göhr) 41.37
2) Soviet Union 42.54
3) Europe 43.38

  1. Actually, the East …
Actually, the East Germans were well known for steroids. Most of they athletes could not bear children, excessive hair growth, heart disease, or died from cancer. 190 East German athletes sued Jenapharm for 8 million euros and won. The firm knowingly supplied the steroids that were given to them by trainers and coaches from the 1960s onwards until East Germany’s demise in 1989. Ines Geipel admitted to doping when she ran the record 4×100.

    wow, you guessed correctly.

  3. LMAO! Griffith- …
LMAO! Griffith-Joyner was drugged up to her eyeballs as well. She went from 40th in the world in 1987 to setting world records that still stand in 2012. She retired at the absolute height of her career in 1989, because after the Ben Johnson fiaso, the International Olympic Commitee set up new drug tests…in 1989!!!!! Explain that will ya???

    Wikipedia :

“After an unremarkable start to her career then finishing second to Silke Gladisch-Möller in the 1987 world championships, Flo-Jo’s physique began to change dramatically. By the start of the season in 1988 – Olympic year – she was toned and extraordinarily powerful. Suddenly the also-ran was rewriting the record books, running times that were tenths of seconds faster than anything in history. Yet little more than a year later, at the height of her powers, Flo-Jo retired.”

  5. “There were no …
“There were no signs of steroid use from her autopsy”…Are you a complete and total fool? Why would she be on steroids 10 years after retiring????????

  6. You are like all …
You are like all fools who ignore reality. Her times have still not been beaten 24 years later and you think that’s normal right? Are you 12 years old???

  10. She died at age 38 …
She died at age 38 from a congenital heart defect. There were no signs of steroid usage from her autopsy. Furthermore, her coach and brother-in-law, Bob Kersee, never has been accused of pushing drugs on her, his wife, Jackee Joyner-Kersee; Valerie Briscoe; Jeanette Bolden; Greg Foster; Andre Phillips; Gail Devers; Joanna Hayes; Dawn Harper; Shawn Crawford; Ginne Powell-Crawford; Allyson Felix, & Jeneba Tarmoh. She was a freak of nature then just as usain Bolt is now.

She died in her early 30s…many former Olympians have fessed up…her coach was a known steroid pusher…

  15. Are you kidding me? …
Are you kidding me? I base my opinion on a lot of research. They were doped, man. And doped hard. I know their sacrifices. They took all kinds of experimental hormones that affected how they developed and went through puberty, I know it was hard, But that whole thing was unnatural and I’m glad today a group of athletes who worked hard without living such hellish lives have beaten it. I think the Germans would agree too. That was an evil world record. They were treated like objects.

  16. US women broke the …
US women broke the record cleanly. They did a lot of training and achieved it. but if some one say this is freaky, then how US women did that ? the answer is clear, you know it.

  22. fuck you, thank god …
you, thank god marita koch’s 400m is still intact. all those east german records stand as a reminder that competitiveness is not a pure virtue, it corrupts people, whether its taking steroids or sacrificing your whole life to win in a stupid sport, both are are tragic. the east german girls made greater sacrifices than any current athletes will ever make.

  23. I am too. The USA …
I am too. The USA destroyed it. But, how sad that it took 27 years. This record should have gone in 1988. The USA had a team of Brown, Echols, Griffith-Joyner & Ashford with PRs of 10.91, 10.83, 10.49; & 10.76 (Ashford’s best that year was 10.81). They should’ve destroyed the WR. But flimsy passes took care of that. It was their raw speed that that saved them at the ’88 Games. The steroids notwithstanding, one still has to acknowledge just how good this WR was.

  24. Don’t be foolish! I …
Don’t be foolish! I don’t condone PEDs whatsoever. The point I was making here was how well the former GDR ran relays. The USA has assembled teams that had the potential to break this stupendous WR, but couldn’t get the stick around. The recent 40.82 gold medal performance by the USA with pretty good paases speaks to what speed and passing can accomplish. Just think what the WR could’ve been had they passed like the GDR – 40.3.
