Why would you ever want to control blood sugar with a drug? I’ve never known a single person that was deficient in drugs. Not one.
Your body will control blood sugar just fine if you give it what it needs to do the job and not put a bunch of garbage in your body that prevents you from controlling the blood sugars.
If you control your blood sugar with drugs, do you think the problem has gone away? Masking symptoms is no way to fix a problem. The underlying problem will create more problems and you will be on a drug path that won’t quit.
Find a good Certified Nutritional Therapist in your area that can test you for deficiencies and then recommend a good diet that will fix the blood sugar issue. Doctors are not the ones to go to for this; they are ignorant about nutrition.
There are some very good blood sugar regulation diets that will take care of your problem and when you do this, you will find that you will be able to control your endocrine system much better as well.
All drugs will damage your liver and kidneys.
good luck to you

If taken correctly it should not be detrimental to kidneys. On the other side of the coin poor diabetic control over a long period of time is one of the commonest causes of kidney disease and failure. Diabetes is generally a lifelong problem with the exception of some mild Type II diabetics who are very overweight. Here significant weight loss may obviate the need for the pill in rare instances.

Metformin is a medication that allows your body to use insulin better.
For type 2 diabetics the cells – which need glucose to function right – have a hard time accepting the key of insulin to allow the glucose to flow into the cells – so instead it stays in the blood…
What is hard on the kidneys is all the extra glucose in the blood. The kidneys work on filtering out extra stuff and during the process water is used to allow the extra stuff to get out and into the urine – it is suppose to get most of it absorbed back in – but with their being too much glucose – the reabsorbtion part isn’t done right…. and instead it stays in the urine – and gets passed out of the body… frequently… this leads to frequent urination as well as dehydration… and it (simply put) overworks the kidneys…
That is hard on the kidneys…
Your doctor can (and likely should) do tests on both your kidneys and your liver to ensure they are working correctly – regardless of the Metformin…
While is is better to have the body do the work naturally, sometimes our bodies can’t and medications are needed. There is no perfect medication and all medications have some side effects – but they can be less than what the alternative is…
Depending on your glucose testing numbers – and what you eat – you can often (with type 2) control your glucose levels by watching what you eat and by exercising.
Diabetics need to test often – 2 hours after they eat and 1 hour before they eat. Also – you can do more testing when trying new foods – to see what the effect of that food is on you – different people react differently to different foods. Try testing in 15 minute increments up to 2 hours to see what the effects of a food are….
Look into the glycemic index to see how foods are ranked (based on how fast it makes one glucose levels rise in the blood)… the higher the number the less diabetic friendly the food is….
Also a test called an A1C is usually done every 3 months – this gives a general picture of your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.

You and your doctor should discuss this small problem. Yes, the Metformin and other diabetes drugs may damage the kidneys.
But the damage done by not controlling the glucose numbers is so very much higher!!
I am totally disheartened reading the monographs on most of the drugs the doctors hand out for our consumption for control of diabetes and the periferal diseases: blood pressure and lipids!!
ALL the drugs have that little line in the monograph: they MAY cause damage to liver, kidneys, etc.
But do we really have a choice? We must control the diabetes glucose levels or the damage will be 100 times worse to these very same organs! And not only that there is the nerve damage and the tiny periferal blood vessel damage that happens with uncontrolled blood glucose levels!! We would have gangrene in every little ouch and hangnail, and we would be in extreme danger of loosing our eyesight.
The trade off of not taking the Metformin is not a good scenerio!! I would rather take the met than loose precious parts of me one at a time.
Oh, yes, I intend to live long enough to see great great grandchildren!!! I want to be 100 years old, and irritate my children and grandchildren by having little tantrum fits and getting away with it!!

My husband is an insulin diabetic who also takes avandia. He see’s a specialist in Diabetes and gets tested regularly.
I agree that sometimes you can be diet controlled but not always. Sometimes your body fights against you. My husband is 3rd generation type 2 diabetic.
He was diagnosed very early in his disease at age oh I think it was about 26 or 27. He has been in treatment every since. He is 53 in a few days.
It is scarey trying to control something as serious as diabetes. I have met people who say oh you have diabetes oh well at least it won’t kill you.
Well how wrong you are. My mother in law died as an indirect cause of her diabetes. She ended up on dialysis and after many years her bones be came so fragile that turning her could break her bones. She broke a hip and a leg before she died. Then because the nursing home didn’t turn her and watch her skin well enough she ended up with a bed sore that got an infection (staff infection) that killed her. On the death certificate it says cause of death bedsore.
So please don’t think that diabetes can’t kill… it can.
